Use the oil your manufacturer specifies, change it far more often than feels necessary, and judge by colour rather than counting cycles. Milky oil is water emulsified into it, and water is a poor lubricant — running a pump on saturated oil is the most common way owners destroy them.
Which oil
Rotary vane vacuum pumps take a specific grade of vacuum pump oil, not motor oil, not compressor oil, and not hydraulic fluid. Vacuum pump oil has a very low vapour pressure, which is the whole point: ordinary oil would evaporate into the vacuum you are trying to create.
Beyond that, follow your manual. Manufacturers specify a grade and sometimes a brand, and using something else on a machine under warranty is a conversation you do not want to have with support. Blue Alpine supply oil with the machine and sell a replacement kit with a filter at around $46.

Judge by colour, not by count
- Clear and light: fine, keep going.
- Slightly hazy: water is starting to accumulate. Next batch, change it.
- Milky or opaque: change it now. This is emulsified water and it is not lubricating properly.
- Dark or gritty: change it now and consider why. Grit means wear or contamination getting past the filter.
- Thin and runny when warm: the oil has broken down. Change it.
How to change it
- Run the pump for a few minutes first. Warm oil flows out and carries the contaminants with it. Cold oil leaves the sludge behind.
- Isolate and drain into a container. Take the full amount; a partial change dilutes rather than fixes.
- Refill to the marked level. Overfilling causes the pump to spit oil out of the exhaust.
- Run for a minute with the gas ballast open if your pump has one. This helps drive off residual moisture.
- Dispose of it properly. Used vacuum pump oil goes to a waste oil facility, not a drain.
The gas ballast, briefly
Many rotary vane pumps have a gas ballast valve that admits a little air during operation. It reduces the ultimate vacuum slightly but stops water condensing inside the pump, which is exactly the problem you are managing. If your pump has one and you are drying high-moisture loads, using it will keep the oil clean longer.

If oil changes sound like a chore you will not keep up with, ask both manufacturers about oil-free pump options before you buy. It costs more upfront and removes the maintenance entirely.
