Oil mist filters: what they do and when to add one

What the mist actually is

A rotary vane pump moves gas out through an exhaust, and some oil goes with it as a fine aerosol. In a garage with the door open you may never notice. In a utility room or basement with the door shut, you get an oily film on nearby surfaces over weeks and a smell that lingers.

It is not dangerous at these quantities, but it is unpleasant, it coats things, and it means you are slowly losing oil that needs topping up.

What a three-stage filter does

1. Stage one is a coarse coalescing element that catches the largest droplets.
2. Stage two is finer, catching the aerosol.
3. Stage three polishes the exhaust and, on some units, returns the collected oil to the pump reservoir.

That third point is the part worth noticing: a filter that returns the oil reduces how often you top up, which slightly offsets its cost over years.

When you need one

• Pump indoors or in a small room: yes, get one. This is the case it exists for.
• Pump in an open garage or outbuilding: optional. Many owners never bother.
• Anyone sensitive to smells, or with the machine near living space: yes.
• Running a food business: yes, and possibly a requirement depending on your local rules.
• Oil-free pump: not applicable. No oil, no mist.

The buying order that saves money
